Dosing for pediatric liquid herbal formulas

Dosing for acute health issues, problems that come up suddenly: 3-5x’s per day

Dosing for chronic health issues, problems that do not go away over time: 1-2x’s per day

Infants under 6 months old are not treated with herbal medicine unless necessary.

7-12 months: about 10 drops per dose (1/2 dropper)

12-24 months: about 20 drops (1 dropper full)

2-5 years: about 30 drops per dose (2 droppers full)

5-7 years: about 45 drops per dose (3 droppers full)

7 years and up: about 60 drops per dose (3 droppers full)

*A full dropper contains 15-20 drops*

Strategies for giving liquid herbal formulas to children

1. To dose infants, fill dropper, put dropper into child’s mouth and squeeze herbs out.
2. If your child complains of taste, try the techniques listed below
   1. Bypass your child’s tongue by offering herbs with a straw.
   2. Have your child suck on an ice cube to numb the tastebuds.
   3. Mask the taste of the herbs with grape juice (or a juice they do not normally consume), in applesauce or in a smoothie.
   4. Ease into the full dose by starting with a smaller dose.
   5. Be creative and firm, the herbs work when taken consistently. Herbs are our medicine.
