Boost It With Ginseng

Ginseng is said to resemble a human body in shape, and it has been used for years in Asia.  Recently, it has become a popular item in Western culture. Many claims about this root have been advertised, such as its reputation for extending longevity and its use for stamina and endurance. Let’s look at the types of ginseng and the differences.  There are three main types of ginseng used:

American Ginseng

American ginseng nourishes the yin of the body. When one is deficient in yin, heat can flare and a person can experience hot flashing. American ginseng generates fluids and moistens dryness and clears heat supporting normal temperature and restoring normal body fluid. Its taste properties are bitter and slightly cold.

Siberian Ginseng or Eleuthero Ginseng

Siberian ginseng is not a true ginseng because it does not contain ginsenosides; catagorizing it as an adaptogenic herb not a tonic herb. The value of an adaptogenic herb is to increase the bodies resistance to stress and improve overall vitality.

Korean Ginseng (Panax Ginseng / Ren Shen)

Korean ginseng has a stronger effect than American ginseng.  According to western herbology, the positive effects of Korean ginseng include promoting vitality and stamina, working as a tonic to benefit the entire body, easing the effects of heavy exercise, supporting the body as it ages, restoring and strengthening the immune system, supporting and maintaining cellular health, supporting the body’s natural defenses against emotional and environmental stressors and enhancing mental clarity. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine herbology, the taste of Korean Ginseng (Ren Shen) is sweet, slightly bitter and warm.  This flavor has the effect of benefiting the heart, spleen and lungs. Korean Ginseng relieves heart palpitations, insomnia, generates fluids, quenches thirst, benefits original qi making it an excellent restorative treatment for exhaustion.

The most important thing to think about when it comes to purchasing herbal medicine is quality.  The 4 main quality issues are 1. Is the correct species of the herb being used?  There are cheaper look alike herbs that can pass visual tests and not have the same effect. 2. What part of the plant is used to make the herbal medicine?  There are more and less potent parts of plants, with ginseng, it is the root that is the most potent.  3. Are the herbs clean free from pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and other toxic substances?  4. Most importantly, does the herbal manufacturer measure and publish the phytochemistry showing the strength of the herbs medicinal potentcy?  Because the quality of the herbal medicine is key to experiencing success with herbal medicine, we recommend the highest quality herbs through MediHerb.

According to MediHerb here is the “Korean Ginseng Quality Story”

“Panax ginseng is a widely used and misunderstood herb. Traditionally the main root of the plant has been preferred for clinical use. The other parts of the plant such as the root hairs, leaves, leafstalks, etc., are considered inferior and are never used clinically in the East. However, many herb traders will sell the other plant parts as they are substantially cheaper than the main root. The major marker compounds used to characterize Panax ginseng are the ginsenosides which occur in all parts of the plant and if you were to only consider total ginsenosides the main root is not the highest in content. The importance is in the ratio of specific ginsenosides. The European clinical studies were undertaken on extracts manufactured from the main root of Panax ginseng which have a particular ratio of ginsenosides. To achieve the clinical results obtained traditionally and supported by clinical trials it is important to use raw material from the correct plant part and the correct species. This is readily acheivable using HPLC which easily distinguishes the different preparations.”
